Prebiotics and Probiotics in Immune Health
Prebiotics and/or probiotics supplementation are strategies for the treatment of non-communicable diseases and for strengthening our immune system and our microbiota. Probiotics have been defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the WHO (FAO/WHO) as “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”. The definition of prebiotic has been recently updated by the ISAPP as “a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit”.
These fields have exploded in recent years due to the increased knowledge of the human gut microbiota and the awareness about the health implication of dysbiosis.
Both prebiotics and probiotics have been used for different applications and currently, their mechanistic effects are more understood.
This Special Issue of Nutrients aims to present a collection of papers to give an overview of new findings and concepts in the field of probiotics and prebiotics, including results on next-generation probiotics, the impact of interventions at different stages (pregnancy, early life, adult, elderly), and on different pathological situations.

Claire cherbuy has been working in the field of gut microbiota-host interaction for more than 20 years at the National Institute of Agronomical and Environmental Research in France. She obtained her PhD in 1996 and since then has published more than 50 articles and reviews in this field. She is an expert in nutrition, probiotics, prebiotics. She has been a guest lecturer at several national and international congresses and is on a scientific board of nutrition experts.
Bodinier Marie, Allergy Team, UR1268 BIA, INRAE (National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment), France
Dr Marie Bodinier, (BSc, BND, PhD) is research director (DR2) at the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE, BIA unit) and head of the Allergy team of the BIA unit in Nantes (France). She is a qualified immunologist and researcher with expertise in allergic disease. She is leading translational research to understand the early mechanisms of allergy development and to establish perinatal nutritional strategies for allergy prevention. Currently, she is coordinating the clinical trial PREGRALL (clinical trial : NCT03183440, 2018-2021) assessing the effects of prebiotics supplementation during pregnancy for allergy prevention (C. Cabridain, et al. 2019. BMJ open.) and the ancillary study CIMMAP funded by the ANR.

Debbie Palmer (BSc, BND, PhD) is an experienced clinical dietitian and researcher with expertise in nutrition, allergic disease and clinical trials during pregnancy, lactation and infancy. Debbie is head of Childhood Allergy and Immunology Research at the Telethon Kids Institute, Perth, Western Australia. The primary focus for this research group is investigating nutritional strategies for allergy prevention. Debbie currently leads a randomised controlled trial investigating the effects of maternal prebiotics dietary supplementation during pregnancy and breastfeeding on reducing child allergic diseases.
Lucie Etienne-Mesmin is an associate professor in MEDIS (Microbiology, Digestive Environment & Health) laboratory at Université Clermont Auvergne, in Clermont-Ferrand (France). She is a microbiologist and her current research activities aim to better understand the behavior in the human digestive environment of pathogenic strains responsible for enteric infections in humans (enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC)), and in particular the role of the intestinal microbiota and mucus in the pathophysiology of these infections. Her work also aims at evaluating the anti-infectious potential of probiotic microorganisms and prebiotic dietary fibers.
Carole Brosseau obtained her PhD at the St Georges University of London in 2010 on the effects of Vitamin D in breast cancer. She then returned to France and performed different post-doctoral fellowships in the field of the immune tolerance and especially on regulatory B cells in the context of lung transplantation and severe asthma. , Carole is working on strategies to prevent food allergy based on prebiotic supplementation during pregnancy.
Dr Muriel Thomas is a senior scientist at INRA (DR2), and her projects concern the health benefits sustained by diet and microbes. She is leading the group “microbiota and epithelia”, which has contributed to better understand the dynamic dialogue installed between the intestinal epithelium and microbiota. Her expertise is based on the use of germ-free and gnotobiotic rodents harbouring a controlled microbiota after fecal transfer. A flow of analysis combining cellular, in vitro and in vivo tools allows the functional characterization of probiotics and prebiotics. Recently, she has developed a new area of expertise around the microbes found in lungs and regulating the susceptibility to respiratory diseases like asthma. The group combines approaches at the frontier between physiology, microbiology, and nutrition. In addition, her engagement in public health agency (ANSES) and specialized societies (SFNEP) is an asset to adapt her projects with the public health priorities, regulatory framework and food safety policy. She is engaged in applied projects, based on microbial strategy with high potential of transfer (grants from “SATT-Paris Saclay” and ‘incuballiance”) and she is co-founder of the start-up Carembouche (www.carembouche.fr).
